Chinese citizens in Karachi retract harassment complaint following promise from provincial authorities to investigate

Six Chinese nationals in Karachi, Pakistan, have withdrawn a harassment complaint against police after provincial authorities promised to investigate the issue. The men had claimed that police restrictions were impacting their businesses, despite investing heavily in the city. The Sindh province government stated that any grievances should have been directed to the Chinese embassy instead of the court. The men’s lawyer, Rehman Mahsud, confirmed the withdrawal of the petition, citing satisfaction with government assurances. Following the deaths of two Chinese nationals in a bomb attack last year, all Chinese workers are required to inform police before traveling for security reasons. The attack was claimed by the Baloch Liberation Army, accusing China of exploiting the province’s resources. China has urged Pakistan to safeguard Chinese workers in the face of rising militant threats. Karachi is home to several Chinese businesses and workers as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The incident highlights the security challenges faced by Chinese nationals in Pakistan as they engage in various infrastructure projects in the country.
