Two individuals accused of scamming an elderly Virginia woman out of $130,000 in a fake prize scheme have been arrested and charged by authorities in Prince William County. Darien Deventon Smith, 31, and Sheniece Elaine Smith, 32, both of Bridgeport, Connecticut, allegedly contacted the 77-year-old victim in March 2024, claiming she had won a significant amount of money and a vehicle. They instructed the victim to pay fees in order to collect her prizes, leading her to send them funds, open multiple bank accounts, provide them with debit cards, purchase money orders, and attempt to buy a vehicle over several months.
The suspects have been charged with obtaining money by false pretenses and conspiracy to commit a felony, with court dates pending. The Prince William County Police Department is urging anyone with information on the case to contact their tip line at 703-792-7000.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of being cautious when contacted about supposed prizes or winnings, particularly for elderly individuals who may be more vulnerable to scams. Authorities are working to hold those responsible for preying on vulnerable members of the community accountable for their actions.
