U-M facing new lawsuit alleging violation of protesters’ constitutional rights

Five more individuals, including two students, are suing the University of Michigan for allegedly violating their constitutional rights by essentially banning them from campus following their participation in pro-Palestine demonstrations. The plaintiffs argue that the school infringed upon their free speech and due process rights by issuing broad trespassing tickets without evidence of wrongdoing, effectively banning them from campus. They are seeking an injunction to overturn the bans and prevent similar bans in the future.

The lawsuit, filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan and the Sugar Law Center for Economic and Social Justice, aims to challenge the bans imposed on the individuals and halt the university from issuing such bans in the future. The lead plaintiff, Jonathan Zou, a mechanical engineering sophomore, claims he was arrested during a protest and subsequently banned from campus.

The lawsuit alleges that the pro-Palestine protesters have been targeted unfairly compared to other groups, with the university’s actions disproportionately affecting them. The plaintiffs argue that the bans violate their fundamental constitutional rights and threaten democratic principles.

The University of Michigan has been the site of several protests related to the Israel-Gaza conflict, with previous lawsuits filed against the school for allegedly targeting pro-Palestinian demonstrators. The current lawsuit highlights the experiences of the plaintiffs, detailing instances where they were arrested and banned from campus following their participation in demonstrations. The plaintiffs seek justice and the restoration of their rights through legal action.
