FBI Agents Take Legal Action to Prevent Disclosure of Roles in Jan. 6 Incidents

FBI agents have filed a lawsuit against the Justice Department to stop them from collecting information on their involvement in past investigations related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack and President Trump’s retention of classified documents. The agents fear that this information could be used to retaliate against them and their families through firings or other actions. They also worry that the information could be publicized by Trump’s allies, putting them in danger from those convicted in the attack who have been released from prison.

The agents, who claim to represent at least 6,000 current and former FBI workers, have asked a federal court to block the Justice Department from compiling the information. They argue that the gathering and use of this information violates their First Amendment and due process rights. The Trump administration has already fired numerous prosecutors who pursued charges against Trump, adding to the agents’ concerns.

The agents say they were recently instructed to fill out a survey detailing their roles in the investigations, with some being told their supervisors would be filling them out instead. They believe that this process could lead to further retaliation against them. A spokesperson for the Justice Department has not yet responded to the lawsuit.
