Owner admits guilt in federal charges

Grei Mendez, the owner of a New York day care where a 1-year-old died from fentanyl poisoning and three other children were hospitalized, pleaded guilty to federal charges, including conspiracy to distribute narcotics resulting in death and possession with intent to distribute narcotics. Mendez faces a minimum of 20 years in prison and possibly life in prison. Her husband and a co-conspirator were also involved in running the fentanyl operation at the daycare, resulting in the death of one child and serious bodily injury to others. The incident at the Divino Niño daycare center in the Bronx led to increased scrutiny of day care centers in New York City and a backlog of background checks for child care providers.

The children were hospitalized for suspected fentanyl poisoning after being found unresponsive by police at the day care center. One child died while three others were administered Narcan. The authorities found large quantities of fentanyl and heroin hidden in secret compartments in the daycare center, where children played, ate, and slept, as well as drug paraphernalia. Mendez and other defendants attempted to cover up the drug operation when the children were exposed to fentanyl.

The incident sparked public outcry and calls for increased child protection measures in day care facilities. The incident also highlighted the importance of thorough background checks for child care providers and employees. New York City officials vowed to protect children in the wake of the incident and addressed concerns about the safety of daycare facilities in the city.
