Coach DaLawn Parrish leaves Prince George’s Co. after winning 6 state football titles, embarks on new journey down south

Former Dr. Henry Wise Jr. High School football coach, DaLawn Parrish, has made the decision to leave the Upper Marlboro-based program after 17 successful seasons with six state titles and 10 county championships. Parrish cited personal reasons, including the long commute from his home in Charles County, as well as disagreements with county policies and safety concerns surrounding high school sporting events.

Eight months after his announcement, Parrish is gearing up for a new high school football season at Westlake High School in Charles County. Described as the “Bill Belichick of high school football” by his players, Parrish brings his winning mentality to the Wolverines, where he will compete in the 2A division.

Despite the challenges of fewer players and facing new opponents in Southern Maryland, Parrish is determined to lead the Wolverines to a championship. Players like quarterback Will Drakeford Jr. and linebacker Timothy Freelon III have embraced the coaching change and are focused on achieving their goal of winning the state championship.

Parrish’s departure from Wise may have come as a surprise, but he still maintains a deep connection to the community and the school. As he begins this new chapter at Westlake, Parrish is excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and the chance to bring his winning legacy to a new program. The Wolverines’ first game will be against Northern High School in Calvert County, where they will start their journey towards the championship.
