In a thrilling season opener, Slinger rallied for a 44-28 victory over Menomonee Falls on Friday night. After falling behind 21-10 at halftime, Slinger made key adjustments in the third quarter led by senior quarterback Michael Thiede. Thiede orchestrated three scoring drives in the third quarter, including a 38-yard touchdown pass to Lucas Sonn, a 7-yard touchdown run by Kaleb Burkel, and a 1-yard plunge by Kaiden Rhyner to take a 31-21 lead entering the final period.
Thiede, who struggled in the first half, showcased his talent in the second half, throwing a 31-yard touchdown pass to Sonn and scoring on a 3-yard run. Slinger’s defense also stepped up, with Chase Leverence intercepting a pass and returning it for a 47-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 38-21.
Despite a late touchdown by Menomonee Falls, Slinger maintained control of the game with Thiede leading a 50-yard scoring drive, capped off by a 31-yard touchdown pass to Sonn. Thiede credited the offensive line for their performance, acknowledging their role in wearing down the Falls defense.
Menomonee Falls coach Bobby Regent-Smith praised Slinger for their adjustments at halftime and acknowledged that his team made correctable mistakes. Overall, it was a hard-fought game with both teams showing determination and skill on the field.
