Hosting a Lunar New Year Celebration – Beverly Nguyen Style

Beverly Nguyen recently hosted a Lunar New Year party at 102 Franklin Street in New York City, complete with traditional Vietnamese dishes and cocktails. The event, which was particularly meaningful to Nguyen due to the recent passing of her grandmother, brought together a diverse group of guests including architects, designers, and magazine editors.

Nguyen’s preparation for the party included cleaning her apartment to welcome fresh energy, setting up an altar to honor her ancestors, and sticking to traditional pre-holiday rituals like not making major life changes. The atmosphere at the party was set with sultry red lighting and large bouquets of orchids, creating a scene reminiscent of the film ‘In the Mood for Love.’

The menu included Vietnamese classics like pork rolls, sticky rice cakes, and caramelized pork belly, as well as cocktails featuring Glenlivet and Martell Blue Swift. The night was filled with lively music, including a traditional lion dance and a disco and 1980s playlist curated by a friend of Nguyen’s.

Nguyen’s party tip for hosting a larger gathering is to have a variety of dishes for guests to try, rather than just one main course. Ultimately, the event was a celebration of tradition, friendship, and the coming together of different generations and cultures.
