Historic barn at Cox Farms destroyed in early morning blaze

An investigation is ongoing after a devastating fire destroyed an iconic barn at Cox Farms early Sunday morning. The beloved farm staple, located in Fairfax County, Virginia, went up in flames around 4:30 a.m. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Cox Farm’s caretaker, Sam, believes a heater may have been knocked over by minks, leading to the fire. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded to the scene, extinguishing the flames within 30 minutes.

The fire resulted in the loss of a dozen chickens, a tractor, a popular slide, antique artwork, and a historic sunflower that had been part of the landscape for over a century. Despite the damage, Cox Farms expressed gratitude for the efforts of firefighters, who contained the fire to the barn itself. The farm has been a cherished destination for families in the DMV area, offering seasonal activities such as hayrides, pumpkin picking, slides, and apple cider.

Local residents, like Tammie Jones of Chantilly, expressed shock over the incident, with many feeling the loss of a historical landmark in their community. Despite the devastation, Cox Farms plans to rebuild, with a new, larger slide expected to debut in the fall. The community is rallying around the farm, offering support in the aftermath of this tragic event. Cox Farms remains a symbol of joy and tradition in the area, and plans are already underway to restore the beloved barn to its former glory.
