A 73-year-old missing hiker, Ann Houghton, was found deceased in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park after being reported missing while on a hike. Houghton had volunteered in the park for over 20 years and was well-loved in the community. Her cause of death is still under investigation, but no foul play is suspected. Great Smoky Mountains National Park has had 137 deaths between 2007 and March 2024, with the top causes being suicide, vehicle crashes, drownings, and falls. The last two deaths at the park were a drowning and a vehicle crash. These statistics may not accurately reflect the safety of the park as they do not account for the millions of visitors over the same period. The park service is continuously working to improve safety measures and prevent accidents within the park.
