Ex-FBI Informant to Plead Guilty to Lying About Bidens

A former FBI informant, Alexander Smirnov, has agreed to plead guilty to federal charges related to lying about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden’s alleged involvement with a Ukrainian energy company. Smirnov, who was also indicted on federal tax charges, provided false information to the FBI about Burisma paying bribes to the Bidens. He faces up to four to six years in prison under the plea agreement.

Smirnov, a confidential human source for the FBI, provided information that was used in criminal investigations between 2010 and 2020. Despite being admonished to provide truthful information, Smirnov fabricated evidence about the Bidens in 2020. His claims were documented by the FBI in an FD-1023 form and were shared with House Republicans by Sen. Chuck Grassley.

Smirnov alleged that Burisma executives paid $5 million each to Joe and Hunter Biden to influence U.S. policy, but prosecutors found that his involvement with Burisma occurred after Joe Biden left office and the Ukrainian Prosecutor General was fired. The court documents suggest that Smirnov’s claims were based on bias against Joe Biden and his candidacy.

These false allegations made by Smirnov were a focal point of House Republicans’ impeachment inquiry against President Biden. The plea agreement will see Smirnov pleading guilty to federal charges and potentially facing prison time, supervised release, and a restitution of over $675,000.
