Four Arrested in Maryland for Elderly Scam
Clinton, MD – Four suspects have been charged in Maryland for allegedly misleading an elderly woman out of nearly $40,000 in a "pigeon drop" scam. The accused – James Davis, 77, and Connie Williams, 64, both from Birmingham, Alabama, Kenneth Gooden, 36, also from Alabama, and Mary Daniel, 59, from Antioch, Tennessee – were apprehended by Prince George’s County police just before they could target another victim in Clinton.
The scam unfolded on October 21 outside a business on Marlboro Pike in District Heights. The suspects approached the elderly woman, pretending to have found a bag of cash. They tricked her into believing she could donate the money to charity but required her to provide collateral by withdrawing funds from her account to keep the transaction untraceable. Over two days, she handed over nearly $40,000.
Thanks to advanced investigative techniques utilized by PGPD’s Financial Crimes Unit, the suspects were located at a shopping center in Clinton on October 24. Their arrest followed an attempt to approach another elderly woman in a parking lot to execute the same scheme.
Authorities urge anyone with additional information or potential victims of this scam to reach out to the PGPD’s Financial Crimes Unit at 301-516-1464.
In a related case, William Coleman, 50, of Orange Park, Florida, faces charges in connection with two other "pigeon drop" scams in Prince George’s County. He was arrested in Orlando on Tuesday, further highlighting the ongoing efforts to tackle these deceptive scams targeting vulnerable individuals.
