DC Residents Face Rising Anxiety as Election Day Approaches

Increased Anxiety and Security Surrounding Presidential Election in D.C.

As Election Day approaches, anxiety is at an all-time high in Washington, D.C., with residents expressing deep concerns about safety and stability amid a charged political atmosphere. FOX 5’s Tom Fitzgerald explored these sentiments within the Capitol Hill community, where many inhabitants are weighed down by the uncertainty surrounding the presidential race.

Heightened security has become a prominent feature in the city, with increased measures around the White House and Capitol Hill following a tumultuous campaign trail marked by tension, including recent assassination attempts and President Biden’s unexpected withdrawal from the race. Despite this, some residents remain resolute in their decision to stay in the area. One noted, "I have no plans on leaving… if there’s any protest, there’s going to be something done about it.” Another countered the prevailing negativity, stating, “Sometimes it’s just not necessary to think of the negative — this should be peaceful!”

A recent survey revealed that 70% of Americans are feeling stressed due to the election, and conversations about the race have permeated daily life. In response to these concerns, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has advised businesses against boarding up windows, citing that individuals cope with stress in varying ways.

Dr. Don Grant, a media psychologist, underscores the dangers of "doom-scrolling" on social media as a method of coping, which could exacerbate anxiety levels. Instead, he emphasizes proactive engagement: "You can vote! We still have a little less than a week. You can canvas, volunteer, go door-to-door."

As the nation nears a pivotal moment, the call for peaceful engagement and community solidarity echoes strongly throughout the capital.
