Hurricane Helene caused devastation in Beech Island, South Carolina, where John Savage tragically lost his grandparents, Marcia and Jerry, in one of the deadliest storms in U.S. history. The couple was killed when a huge tree fell on their bedroom, while they were in bed. They were found hugging each other, with Jerry trying to protect Marcia when the tree snapped. The Savages were described as the “best grandparents” and deeply loved by their family and community. The couple, who had been married for over 50 years, were remembered as generous, kind, and humble individuals. A GoFundMe has been set up to help cover their funeral expenses.
The storm resulted in more than 150 deaths, with dozens of victims killed by falling trees. The storm caused flooding, mudslides, and knocked out cell service across multiple states. Marcia, a retired bank teller, was active in her church and known for her beautiful voice, while Jerry, a retired electrician and carpenter, was always eager to work. The couple had four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Granddaughter Katherine Savage said her grandparents were always willing to help out with her three sons, and they had a deep love for each other that lasted until their final day. The tragedy has left the family and community grieving for the loss of the beloved couple.
