Special counsel Jack Smith released a 165-page filing detailing election subversion allegations against Donald Trump. Smith argues that Trump doesn’t deserve immunity from criminal charges because his actions were for private gain, not related to his duty of public office. The filing states that Trump’s scheme was a private one, using criminal means to disrupt the government’s vote collection and counting functions after losing the 2020 election in an attempt to stay in office. Trump is facing charges of conspiring to overturn the election and obstructing Congress in counting Electoral College votes. The filing alleges that Trump engaged in criminal conduct, including lying to state officials, manufacturing fraudulent electoral votes, and inciting the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. The case also focuses on Trump’s interactions with then-Vice President Mike Pence, as Trump pressured Pence to recognize Republican electors from states won by President Joe Biden. Trump’s lawyers opposed the filing, calling it a “monstrosity,” but the judge allowed it to proceed. Trump has until October 17 to formally respond to the allegations.
