Guardians defeat Rays 6-1 behind home runs from Thomas and Ramírez, with Cantillo pitching 5 shutout innings

In a game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Cleveland Guardians came out victorious with a score of 6-1. Lane Thomas and José Ramírez hit back-to-back homers in the eighth inning, while rookie Joey Cantillo pitched five scoreless innings, securing the win for the Guardians. Cantillo, in just his second start at Progressive Field, gave up three hits, walked one, and struck out six. The victory keeps the Guardians three games ahead of the Kansas City Royals in the AL Central division with 13 games remaining in the season.

The win improved Cleveland’s home record to 44-27, the best in the AL, and their overall record to 85-64, trailing only the New York Yankees in the league standings. The game also saw strong offensive contributions from Josh Naylor and David Fry, as well as impressive defensive plays, such as Thomas throwing out a runner at home.

The Rays, on the other hand, are now six games out of the final AL wild-card spot and are struggling on their current road trip. Junior Caminero had a standout performance for Tampa Bay with three doubles and an RBI. The game also featured a close call at home plate that was overturned on replay review, preventing the Rays from taking the lead.

Both teams are dealing with minor injuries to key players, but are looking ahead to the next game in the series. The Rays’ Taj Bradley will face off against the Guardians’ Ben Lively in the upcoming match. Lively, who was hit by a line drive in his last start, will look to bounce back and secure a series win for the Guardians.
