Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has suspended his presidential bid, but his name may still appear on Iowa’s ballot this fall. He announced his decision to withdraw from the race and endorsed former President Donald Trump, removing his name from the ballot in battleground states to prevent spoiling the election. However, Iowa has not received notice of his withdrawal, and the deadline for candidates to withdraw is August 29. Kennedy originally challenged President Joe Biden as a Democrat before founding the We The People party. He met Iowa’s ballot access requirements in April and is still listed as a presidential candidate, along with his running mate Nicole Shanahan. Iowans can request a ballot starting August 27, with early voting beginning on October 16 and the election on November 5. Kennedy’s decision affects the Iowa ballot, which also includes Trump, Kamala Harris/Tim Walz (Democrat), Chase Oliver/Mike ter Maat (Libertarian), Claudia De la Cruz/Karina Garcia (Party For Socialism and Liberation), William P. Stodden/Stephanie H. Cholensky (Socialist Party USA), and Kennedy/Shanahan (We The People). Follow Stephen Gruber-Miller on Twitter at @sgrubermiller for more updates on Iowa Statehouse and politics.
