James Morris, son of former Gateway Church Pastor Robert Morris, has resigned from his position at Gateway Church in Texas following his father’s admission of inappropriate sexual behavior 35 years ago. Robert Morris admitted to having engaged in misconduct with a young lady, leading to his resignation as well. James and his wife, Bridgette, are no longer serving as pastors at Gateway Church. The church’s Elder Board expressed their desire to see the couple serve as senior pastors elsewhere in the future, thanking them for their service to the congregation.
James Morris had been expected to take over leadership of Gateway Church from his father but stepped down following the allegations. An independent investigation into Robert Morris’ conduct has been initiated, with the Haynes and Boone law firm appointed to oversee the inquiry. James Morris also took a temporary leave of absence from the board of elders at the church due to his familial relationship with his father.
The allegations against Robert Morris were made public by 54-year-old Cindy Clemishire, who claimed that Morris had sexually abused her starting at the age of 12 in 1982. The abuse allegedly continued until 1987. Clemishire hopes that by sharing her story, other possible victims of Morris’ alleged actions will come forward. The church has assured the congregation that an independent investigation is ongoing and plans to provide updates during services.
