New safety regulations may be introduced for late-night businesses in Prince George’s County

The Prince George’s County Council is considering a bill called the Late Night Safety Plan, introduced by Councilmember Krystal Oriadha, to address safety concerns during late-night hours. The bill aims to combat a crime wave and make the community feel safer, particularly for residents who are afraid to go out at night. The bill applies to businesses open between midnight and 4 a.m., including bars, gas stations, convenience stores, and more.

Businesses covered by the bill will be required to submit a safety plan for approval by law enforcement, which could include measures like extra lighting, surveillance cameras, staff training, and on-site security. Businesses that do not comply with the safety plan requirements will not be allowed to operate during those late-night hours. The legislation is individualized for each business, providing flexibility in meeting the safety requirements.

While the Maryland Restaurant Association and the Maryland Retailers Alliance support the intention of the bill to provide a safe environment for customers and employees, they have asked for more clarity and transparency regarding the expectations for businesses. Some businesses have raised concerns about the added cost of providing on-site security. The bill is expected to be in place by November, pending a public hearing and final vote. Similar legislation has been implemented in Montgomery County, requiring businesses to have a late-night safety plan for hours between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.
