Title: Constitutional Lawyer Enrique Anaya Detained Amid Controversy Over President Bukele’s Government

Enrique Anaya, a constitutional lawyer and vocal critic of President Nayib Bukele’s administration, was arrested on Saturday for alleged involvement in money laundering and asset laundering, according to a statement from the Attorney General’s office on social media platform X. His arrest took place at his home in Santa Tecla, just outside San Salvador, and he is expected to be presented in court within days.

Anaya is known for challenging Bukele’s legal maneuvers, including his re-election bid, which he contested in 2021. Anaya played a role in founding legal arguments that facilitated Bukele’s controversial re-election, pushing for a ruling that maintained he could run again without automatically being elected. Despite this, Anaya had previously petitioned the Supreme Electoral Tribunal against Bukele’s candidacy, arguing it violated the constitution.

Anaya’s arrest follows ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of dissenting voices in El Salvador. In May, human rights activist Ruth Eleonora López was detained under similar allegations of illicit enrichment. Her case has drawn criticism from local and international organizations, who contend that the current administration is suppressing opposition through legal intimidation.

In a recent post, Anaya referred to Bukele’s rule as a “Bukelean dictatorship” and highlighted the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights’ concerns regarding the deteriorating state of civic freedoms in the country. President Bukele responded to growing dissent by asserting that his government would no longer tolerate impunity among critics, alluding to alleged ties between opposition figures and criminal elements.

The detaining of Anaya marks another chapter in the tense political landscape of El Salvador, raising alarms about the erosion of democratic principles under Bukele’s leadership.
