Jaguars’ Hines-Allen Gets Leaner: Aiming for Defensive Redemption
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville Jaguars defensive lineman Josh Hines-Allen has transformed his physique for the 2024 NFL season, shedding excess weight and focusing on peak performance. Weighing in at a more agile figure, the seventh-year pro has turned the page from last season’s struggles where the Jaguars finished 31st in total defense.
Under former defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen’s controversial “mass kicks ass” philosophy, Hines-Allen, like many teammates, bulked up to roughly 285 pounds. This strategy, however, did not yield the desired results, as the team allowed an average of 390 yards and 26 points per game in 2023, alongside a mere nine takeaways.
Hines-Allen, who previously achieved a career-high of 17.5 sacks, experienced complications related to the added weight, suggesting it impacted his overall performance. “My body was not cooperating as much as I would want it to,” he noted, acknowledging the challenges posed by his bulkier frame.
In a move toward a more effective defense, the Jaguars underwent a significant overhaul following a disappointing 4-13 season. New general manager James Gladstone and coach Liam Coen have implemented a strategy advocating for leaner, faster players. Linebacker Devin Lloyd and defensive end Travon Walker have also shed pounds, enhancing their stamina and agility on the field.
With renewed determination, Hines-Allen aims for personal milestones this season, including a spot on the All-Pro team and breaking the franchise sack record of 55 held by Tony Brackens. “I can’t go into another season thinking about my weight,” he declared, signifying a shift in his focus toward performance and dominance on the gridiron.
As the Jaguars prepare for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on the revitalized defense seeking redemption and a fresh start.
