Angels Hold On for 5-4 Win Over Mariners, Hendricks Reaches 100th Career Victory
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Kyle Hendricks celebrated a career milestone with his 100th win as he led the Los Angeles Angels to a narrow 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night. The 35-year-old right-hander tossed six innings, allowing four runs and striking out two, showcasing his ability to escape trouble, notably in a critical fifth inning.
The Mariners, now on a four-game losing streak, struggled to overcome Hendricks and the Angels’ bullpen, consisting of Ryan Zeferjahn, Reid Detmers, and Kenley Jansen, who combined for three scoreless innings. Jansen capped off the game with a flawless ninth for his 13th save.
The Angels pulled ahead 5-4 in the fifth inning, spurred by Jo Adell’s helmet hit by a fastball, followed by Chris Taylor’s RBI double and Nolan Schanuel’s single. Earlier, Taylor had tied the game in the third inning with an RBI single, while Travis d’Arnaud connected for a two-run homer in the fourth.
The Mariners’ offense featured contributions from J.P. Crawford and Rowdy Tellez, but ultimately fell short. A standout defensive play was made by Seattle’s Julio Rodriguez, who leaped at the wall to rob Taylor of a potential two-run homer, thrilling the crowd.
Detmers has shown remarkable improvement lately, boasting just one earned run over his last 12 innings, lowering his season ERA to 5.81. The Mariners look to bounce back as RHP Luis Castillo (4-3, 3.03 ERA) is set to start Saturday against the Angels’ Jack Kochanowicz (3-7, 5.34 ERA).
