More Speed Cameras Being Installed Throughout Fairfax County

Fairfax County Sets to Install New Speed Cameras for Safer Roads

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. – In a bid to enhance road safety, Fairfax County is ramping up efforts to deter speeding by installing new speed cameras. Residents are urged to slow down, especially as new cameras are set to become operational over the coming weeks.

The first wave of installations will target Fairfax County Parkway, a designated work zone, beginning June 15. Cameras will be activated between Pope’s Head Road and Burke Center Parkway, commencing with a 30-day warning period. Following this, effective July 15, violators could face fines of up to $100.

In addition, more speed cameras will be introduced in school zones later this summer, expanding the total to 19 across the county. Ten new school zone cameras will begin their warning period on July 2, with citations commencing August 18. These installations will target schools such as Cardinal Forest Elementary and Mount Vernon High School. A subsequent set of cameras will follow a similar timeline, with an August 18 warning and fines starting on September 17.

Local residents have expressed support for the initiative. Nada Mustafa, a teacher, commented, “I believe it’s a good idea… [it] will make kids safer.” Anne Cullather, another resident, noted that the cameras may change driver behavior positively. A driver echoed this sentiment, admitting a need to curb speeding after receiving multiple tickets.

County leaders are optimistic about the potential impact of the cameras, citing positive statistics from previous installations. As Fairfax County gears up for these changes, officials hope they will ultimately contribute to making the roads safer for all users.
