Global LGBTQ+ Advocates Converge at World Pride Amid Travel Concerns “On Trump’s Doorstep”

World Pride Faces Challenges Amid Political Climate and Visa Issues

Days ahead of World Pride’s human rights conference in Washington, Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, co-founder of UK Black Pride, announced that she had been denied entry into the U.S. after her visa was revoked due to recent travels to Cuba. Despite applying for a nonimmigrant visa, the earliest response she received was scheduled for September, leading her to express frustration over the situation during a video livestream.

With increasing anxiety among LGBTQ+ travelers regarding safety and U.S. political policies, some have opted against attending World Pride. Yasmin Benoit, a British model, emphasized the importance of presence at the event, stating, “This is World Pride on Trump’s doorstep,” aiming to highlight U.S. actions to international observers.

The event, celebrating its 50th anniversary in Washington, has drawn warnings from several governments, cautioning LGBTQ+ travelers about potential legal and social challenges. Organizations like Egale Canada declared a boycott, citing safety concerns for transgender personnel. The African Human Rights Coalition also called for a boycott, labeling the current U.S. administration as hostile to LGBTQ+ rights.

Yet, the desire for unity among LGBTQ+ communities remains strong. Jessica Stern, a former U.S. official for LGBTQ+ rights, noted that many attendees grappled with fears surrounding their safety upon arrival. John Tanzella of the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association reassured travelers about Washington’s inclusivity while urging them to remain aware of local policies.

Amidst the complexities, several attendees underscored the need to connect and strategize globally. With heightened challenges for marginalized communities, Opoku-Gyimah remarked that negative U.S. policies reverberate worldwide. As individuals navigate the political landscape, their collective visibility at World Pride serves as a critical statement of solidarity.
