Prince George’s County Teachers’ Union Votes No Confidence in Superintendent

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — The Prince George’s County Educators Association (PGCEA) has delivered a significant blow to Superintendent Millard House II by passing a vote of no confidence, with over 75% of participating union members opposing his leadership. This decision comes amid ongoing contract negotiations and frustrations over deteriorating classroom conditions and teacher shortages.

PGCEA President Dr. Donna L. Christy emphasized that the vote reflects the educators’ concerns about being "unheard, unsupported, and disrespected," leading to adverse effects on student education. The union’s resolution highlighted key issues, including persistent staffing shortages, reliance on conditionally licensed educators, payroll errors, and poor communication from the administration.

Since House’s appointment two years ago by then-County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, the school district has been facing mounting criticisms. A PGCEA survey revealed that over 80% of educators lack confidence in House’s oversight across critical areas such as academic direction and safety operations.

In response, Superintendent House defended his leadership, citing improvements in graduation rates and school safety initiatives. He highlighted the district’s focus on recruitment, asserting that the recent contract proposals aimed to significantly increase starting educator salaries.

House expressed disappointment at the union’s stance, describing it as a distraction from the progress made. He reaffirmed a commitment to maintain responsible negotiations that respect educators while prioritizing student success.

The school board is expected to address the no-confidence vote at its next meeting. The situation has raised questions about the future stability of leadership in the Prince George’s County public school system amid ongoing challenges.
