Effective Monday at 12:01 a.m., the new measures aim to prevent the chaos seen during a similar travel ban rollout in 2017, providing a buffer before implementation. There are exemptions for lawful permanent residents, dual nationals, and individuals with family ties in the U.S. Certain athletes, diplomats, and refugees will also be allowed entry.
In a recent video message, Trump connected the restrictions to the Boulder, Colorado, terror attack, though the suspect hailed from Egypt—currently not on the banned list—indicating issues with visa overstays. The President emphasized that many targeted countries have been noted for poor vetting practices and historical reluctance to reintegrate their own nationals.
This move is part of ongoing efforts to tighten immigration policies as concerns around national security persist. The Department of Homeland Security supports these decisions, referencing a report on visa overstays that highlights countries with significant non-compliance with U.S. immigration laws.
