Lilo & Stitch Ranks as the Year’s Second Highest-Grossing Film – NBC New York

Press Article: Box Office Smashes Memorial Day Weekend Records

Hollywood’s box office witnessed a spectacular Memorial Day weekend, with Disney’s live-action hybrid “Lilo & Stitch” and “Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning” leading the charge. Memorial Day brought in an impressive $149 million, marking a 120% increase from the same period last year.

“Lilo & Stitch” topped the charts again, claiming $63 million from 4,410 screens, totaling an impressive $280.1 million in domestic sales and $610.8 million globally, making it the second-highest grossing film of 2023. Following closely, “Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning” earned $27.3 million, with an overall domestic total of $122.6 million. However, its reported $400 million production budget poses profitability challenges.

In contrast, newcomers made their mark, with Sony’s “Karate Kid: Legends” debuting at third place, earning $21 million. The film, featuring Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, garnered an A- CinemaScore despite mixed reviews, signaling strong audience engagement. Following behind, “Final Destination: Bloodlines” raked in $10.8 million, becoming the franchise’s highest-grossing title domestically. Rounding out the top five, the horror film “Bring Her Back” opened with $7.1 million, earning a B+ CinemaScore.

Comscore’s senior media analyst, Paul Dergarabedian, noted a trend towards long-term playability in films, suggesting that audience word-of-mouth is becoming increasingly important for sustaining box office momentum.

The summer box office outlook remains optimistic, aiming to reach the pre-pandemic benchmark of $4 billion. As May closes, projections indicate a total of $973 million, showcasing a significant recovery in cinema attendance.
