China Criticizes U.S. Over Trade and Technology Tensions
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — China expressed strong criticism of the United States on Monday, accusing it of actions detrimental to Chinese interests, particularly the recent guidelines on AI chip export controls and the halting of chip design software sales to China. Additionally, the U.S. plans to revoke visas for Chinese students studying in the country has exacerbated tensions.
The Chinese Commerce Ministry stated that these moves violate a recent agreement aimed at reducing tariffs and mending trade relations amidst ongoing economic disputes. Despite an apparent de-escalation in trade hostilities last month, underlying differences remain unresolved. The agreement allows for a temporary 90-day pause in escalating tariffs, but business and investor uncertainty continues as neither side has fully committed to a long-term resolution.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer confirmed an agreement to reduce previously imposed tariffs, with the U.S. cutting a 145% tax to 30% and China lowering its tariffs on American goods from 125% to 10%. However, China highlighted that it has upheld its commitments and suspended retaliatory measures in line with the agreement, countering the U.S. portrayal of China as the provocateur behind recent tensions.
Amidst this backdrop, President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction, alleging that China had violated the agreement, further complicating diplomatic efforts. The U.S. administration has adopted a more aggressive stance, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stating that the U.S. is taking actions to signal its displeasure over the slow progression of negotiations.
As both nations continue to vie for technological supremacy, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence, the rift in trade relations and national policies raises questions about the future of cooperation between the world’s largest economies.
