Shakira Cancels WorldPride 2025 Concert Due to Equipment Issues
Washington, D.C. (AP) – In a surprising turn of events, Colombian superstar Shakira has canceled her highly anticipated opening concert for WorldPride 2025, just one day before the event in Washington, D.C. The Capital Pride Alliance, the primary organizer of the festivities, announced the cancellation on Friday, citing unforeseen equipment difficulties that stem from issues encountered during Shakira’s previous concert in Boston.
“We are deeply disappointed that unforeseen circumstances have forced the concert’s cancellation,” the Alliance stated. Originally scheduled to perform at Nationals Park on Saturday night, Shakira’s production team could not transport the full concert set-up to D.C. in time. This failure followed a similar cancellation of her Thursday night show in Boston, leading to mounting logistical challenges.
Despite Shakira’s withdrawal, the Capital Pride Alliance assured attendees that a variety of events planned for the opening weekend would still proceed. They are working on relocating and reorganizing the kickoff ceremony, with updates promised soon.
This cancellation adds to challenges already facing the festival organizers, as concerns regarding international attendance loom large. Recent criticisms of former President Donald Trump’s policies on LGBTQ+ rights have led some organizations to advise against travel to the U.S., especially for trans and nonbinary individuals risked facing difficulties at border control.
While initial hotel bookings for the final World Pride weekend were reportedly lower than last year, the local and national communities appear to be rallying in response to these issues. Destination D.C. reported a recent surge in last-minute reservations, indicating a growing commitment to support the festivities.
As the community prepares for the WorldPride celebration, security measures, including fencing around event sites, are being put in place to ensure safety during the multi-day rally.
