Valladolid Fans Convicted for Racist Insults Against Vinícius Júnior: Landmark Ruling
MADRID (AP) — In a historic ruling, five Valladolid fans have been found guilty of racially insulting Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior during a league match in 2022. This marks the first time in Spain that racist insults in a soccer stadium have been classified as a hate crime.
A Valladolid court sentenced the offenders to one year in prison, though this sentence is suspended provided they refrain from committing any further offenses and stay away from official national soccer matches for three years. Additionally, they were fined up to 1,620 euros (approximately $1,837).
The Spanish league hailed the decision as a significant stride in combating racism in sports. "This judicial decision represents an unprecedented milestone in the fight against racism in sport in Spain," the league stated.
In a related case last year, three Valencia fans received eight-month prison sentences for similar racist misconduct directed at Vinícius Júnior, but that ruling did not qualify as a hate crime. Instead, these fans were charged with a crime against moral integrity, focusing on discriminatory actions without the explicit hate crime classification.
The league initially filed the complaint against the Valladolid supporters, which was later supported by Vinícius Júnior, Real Madrid, and the public prosecutor’s office. The emphasis on hate crimes for racist insults reinforces a crucial message: intolerance has no place in football.
