Justice Department Investigates Andrew Cuomo Amid Mayoral Bid
The Justice Department is investigating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo over his congressional testimony regarding the state’s COVID-19 response, according to sources familiar with the case. This inquiry comes as Cuomo, a Democrat, is a significant contender in the New York City mayoral race.
House Republicans had previously requested the investigation, alleging that Cuomo misled the House Oversight Committee when he claimed he was uninvolved in reviewing a New York Department of Health report about the pandemic while in office. A spokesperson for the Justice Department declined to comment on the matter on Tuesday. The New York Times first reported the investigation.
Rich Azzopardi, a spokesperson for Cuomo, criticized the timing and motives behind the leak, labeling it as “lawfare and election interference.” He maintained that Cuomo’s congressional testimony was truthful to the best of his recollection and that any claims of political motives are clear.
During the inquiry, Cuomo was questioned about his involvement with external individuals in drafting the Department of Health report. Despite his denial, a former executive assistant testified that the handwriting on a draft resembled Cuomo’s, and an email indicated his edits were included in the review process.
Cuomo resigned in August 2021 following a report by New York Attorney General Letitia James, which concluded he had sexually harassed multiple women. He has consistently denied these allegations.
The investigation has drawn parallels to prior controversies involving the Justice Department during the Trump administration, particularly around political interference in federal cases. This scrutiny raises significant questions as Cuomo seeks to regain political footing amid ongoing legal challenges.
