Musk’s Popularity Dips Amid Washington Influence
WASHINGTON (AP) — Once regarded as a business titan and tech visionary, Elon Musk is experiencing a significant decline in popularity, particularly after his recent involvement in federal government reshaping efforts. According to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, just 33% of Americans view Musk favorably—a drop from 41% in December.
Critics argue that Musk has overreached in his influence over the government. Approximately two-thirds of respondents believe he has wielded too much power in recent months, paralleling concerns over his role in the controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which he established during last year’s campaign. Under his watch, thousands of federal employees have been dismissed, and several agencies are reportedly at a standstill.
Public sentiment is mixed toward President Trump’s broader initiative to reduce the federal workforce. While half of U.S. adults think the efforts have gone too far, about 30% support Musk’s stance.
There is a noticeable partisan divide in perceptions of Musk; roughly 70% of independents and nearly 90% of Democrats feel he has too much influence, while only 40% of Republicans share that concern. Supporters within the GOP praise Musk’s efforts, believing he is effectively “cleaning up” government inefficiencies.
Musk, who has shifted his political views towards the right, is expected to dedicate more time to Tesla, which has seen revenue decline recently. He announced plans to limit his government work to just a few days a week, suggesting a return to his primary business interests.
As Musk transitions away from government, the long-term impacts of his initiatives remain to be seen, both for himself and the federal landscape he sought to reform.
