Accused Man Admits to Scamming George Mason Basketball Team, Pleads Guilty in Bahamas Trip Case

A travel agent who scammed George Mason’s men’s basketball team out of over $100,000 by failing to book their trip to the Bahamas has pleaded guilty to wire fraud. Maurice Eugene Smith entered a guilty plea in federal court in Virginia and has agreed to pay $250,000 in restitution to the George Mason University Foundation. The scheme included other clients as well, according to federal prosecutors. Smith, who operated his company Eugene Toriko, LLC, took payment for the trip and used the money for personal expenses. The team’s trip fell apart when school officials discovered it was never booked, leading to an FBI investigation and Smith’s arrest. His sentencing is set for July 17, with prosecutors recommending a reduced sentence for his guilty plea. George Mason University officials declined to comment on the matter. The incident highlights the importance of vigilance when dealing with travel agents and the potential for fraud in booking arrangements.
