The Parents Bill of Rights is amended by Washington Senate Democrats

Senate Democrats in Washington state successfully passed House Bill 1296, which amends the “Parents’ Bill of Rights,” despite opposition from Republicans. The bill aims to establish safeguards for students and provide clarity to existing laws. However, Republicans argue that the bill undermines parental control and the previous voter-approved law. The Senate passed the bill with a 30-19 vote, sending it back to the House for further review.

The bill includes provisions such as ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment, accurate information in classrooms, and protection against discrimination for students. It also requires schools to notify parents immediately if their child is a victim of a crime on school property. Amendments were added to protect students from discrimination based on various factors and to prevent retaliation against school employees who support students’ legal rights.

Despite Republican attempts to introduce amendments, none were accepted, leading to concerns about the bill’s impact on parental rights. If passed, the bill would apply to public schools, charter schools, and state-tribal education compact schools. The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction would have the authority to withhold funds from non-compliant school districts. The bill now awaits further review and approval before reaching the governor’s desk.
