Alawites in Syria continue to be victims of targeted attacks one month after a violent counteroffensive

BEIRUT (AP) – Alawite civilians in Syria continue to live in fear a month after a wave of revenge attacks left hundreds dead. The Alawite minority, once favored under the rule of the Assad family, now faces persecution from the Sunni majority following Bashar Assad’s government’s downfall. Over 1,700 people, mostly civilians, were killed in March, marking the worst violence since an insurgency overthrew Assad last December. Militants target Alawites in acts of revenge, despite many having no association with the former regime. Attacks have spread along the Syrian coast, and at least 42 people have died in sectarian killings since the end of Ramadan.

Many Alawites, including those who opposed Assad’s rule, have been killed, fueling concerns of transitioning from one dictatorship to another. The ongoing attacks test the interim government’s promises of inclusivity and accountability. The government has pledged to investigate the recent attacks and hold perpetrators accountable. Alawites are fleeing to Lebanon in large numbers, seeking refuge from the violence.

Around 30,000 Alawite Syrians have crossed into Lebanon over the past month. While the UN refugee agency has noted their arrival, little assistance is available, and many refuse to return to Syria due to safety concerns. The ongoing attacks have dashed hopes for an end to violence against Syria’s religious and ethnic minorities post-Assad. The newly formed government faces a crucial test in upholding justice and addressing the violations committed against the Alawite population.
