Western Michigan University’s hockey team secured their first Frozen Four championship in program history with a 6-2 victory over Boston University. Owen Michaels scored two third-period goals to lead the Broncos to victory, with Iiro Hakkarainen, Wyatt Schingoethe, Ty Henricks, and Cole Crusberg-Roseen also contributing goals. Goalie Hampton Slukynsky made 24 saves, closing out the team’s winningest season with 10 consecutive victories.
The victory came after a thrilling double-overtime win against defending champion Denver in the semifinals. Western Michigan’s triumph makes them the fourth team to win the title in their championship game debut, joining the ranks of Denver, Cornell, and Lake Superior State. Boston University fought hard, with Cole Eiserman and Shane Lachance scoring goals for the Terriers. However, a disallowed goal due to a blown whistle hindered their comeback efforts. Goalie Mikhail Yegorov made 22 saves in the matchup of freshman goaltenders.
