Maryland driver found guilty in attempted murder trial for deliberately striking officer

A Maryland driver, Raphael Mayorga, has been found not guilty of attempted murder in the trial where he was accused of hitting a police officer, Sgt. Pat Kepp, who lost both of his legs in the crash. Mayorga was found guilty of second-degree assault and other charges related to the incident that occurred on October 18, 2023. Prosecutors indicated that Mayorga had a history of baiting police into chases, but were unable to enter as much evidence of those past interactions. The defense argued that Mayorga did not try to kill Kepp, and that the collision was not intentional. The prosecution claimed that Mayorga intentionally hit Kepp while the officer was on the highway. Mayorga is facing harsher sentences under the Pat Kepp Act, and could be jailed for over 25 years. Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy expressed disappointment in the outcome of the trial, but commended the judge and jury for their work. Sgt. Kepp has advocated for traffic safety following the incident, and testifies on the opening day of the trial. The Maryland Legislature passed the Pat Kepp Act in response to the crash. Mayorga’s sentencing is set for August 27, and McCarthy intends to pursue a vigorous sentence for the charges Mayorga was found guilty of.
