Judge eases restrictions on DOGE access to sensitive Treasury information – NBC4 Washington

A New York judge has relaxed a ban on Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, allowing one employee to access sensitive Treasury Department information. Judge Jeannette A. Vargas ruled that Ryan Wunderly can access payment and data systems after completing training and submitting a financial disclosure report. The decision came after a lawsuit by 19 Democratic state attorneys general who opposed the access to sensitive information by political appointees. The lawsuit argued that civil servants trained in protecting sensitive data should handle Treasury records, not political appointees. Musk’s DOGE team has been working to modernize Treasury payment systems, leading to privacy concerns and the initial ban by Judge Vargas two months ago. The Department of Government Efficiency was created by Musk to eliminate wasteful government spending and has faced criticism for its access to sensitive information. Supporters, however, see it as a way to rein in government finances. The ruling allows Wunderly to access payment records and data systems containing personally identifiable information and confidential financial information of payees. Vargas’ decision marks a compromise between privacy concerns and the aims of Musk’s department to improve government efficiency.
