Maryland driver on trial for alleged intentional hitting of police officer

Montgomery County man Raphael Mayorga is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder for allegedly intentionally trying to run down Montgomery County police officer Sgt. Pat Kepp on I-270 in October 2023, resulting in Kepp losing both of his legs. Prosecutors claim Mayorga was speeding at 162 miles per hour and deliberately aimed for Kepp while the defense argues the collision was unintentional. Mayorga, who has a history of baiting police into high-speed chases, had previously been arrested by Kepp for speeding. The prosecution presented evidence, including dashboard camera footage, suggesting Mayorga did not attempt to avoid hitting Kepp and continued to drive at a high speed even after the collision. Kepp, an 11-year police veteran, has been advocating for traffic safety and testified during the trial. Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy highlighted Mayorga’s history with police, stating that he had engaged in high-speed chases with law enforcement in the past. The jury heard closing arguments in the case on Thursday, and a verdict is expected soon. Mayorga faces charges of first and second-degree attempted murder and assault, as well as driving without a license. Kepp’s advocacy for traffic safety and his experience as a law enforcement officer have been central to the trial proceedings.
