The 2025 spring season Street Smart campaign has officially launched in the Washington, D.C. region, featuring “Walking Billboards” to promote pedestrian and bike safety. The campaign emphasizes the importance of slowing down on roadways, as speed is a major factor in deadly accidents. The D.C. Highway Safety Office, along with other transportation agencies, has partnered with the Washington Metropolitan Council of Governments to implement the safety effort.
Last year, the DC region saw 110 pedestrian and cyclist fatalities, down from a peak in 2022 but still far from the Vision Zero goal of zero fatalities by 2024. Almost half of these deaths occurred in DC alone. Safety tips include making eye contact with drivers to ensure they see pedestrians and cyclists.
The “Walking Billboards” will be patrolling various areas in the D.C. region, reminding drivers to slow down and watch out for pedestrians and cyclists. The campaign will run until early May, with the goal of promoting safer streets for all road users. Vision Zero DC Crash Analysis can be used to track traffic fatalities and incidents in the region.
The Street Smart campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of safe driving practices and to reduce the number of preventable accidents on the road. Through education and outreach efforts, the campaign hopes to create a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers in the D.C. region.
