Warm Weekend Temperatures Approaching as Cherry Blossoms Near Peak Bloom in DC

Temperatures near 80 degrees are expected this weekend in Washington, D.C. as the famous cherry blossoms near peak bloom around the Tidal Basin. FOX 5’s Maureen Umeh visited the area on Wednesday and observed trees covered in blossoms as well as buds that are yet to bloom. The cherry blossoms are currently in stage five as they progress towards their flowery peak.

FOX 5’s Taylor Grenda forecasts warming temperatures leading up to the weekend, with highs in the mid-50s on Wednesday and increasing to the mid-60s by Friday. Saturday could see highs near 80 degrees with chances of afternoon showers, while Sunday is expected to be in the mid-70s with possible rain.

The National Park Service estimates that peak bloom will begin over the weekend and last for approximately 10 days. Peak bloom, when 70% of the blossoms have opened, typically occurs between the last week of March and the first week of April. However, extreme temperatures have caused peak bloom to occur as early as March 15 in 1990 and as late as April 18 in 1958.

Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the cherry blossoms while following current health and safety guidelines in place due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The cherry blossoms are a symbol of the arrival of spring in the nation’s capital and draw visitors from around the world to witness their beauty.
