Brazil and Japan’s leaders acknowledge importance of multilateralism, commit to enhancing relations

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba agreed to strengthen ties across various sectors during their recent meeting in Tokyo. Lula emphasized the importance of free trade, multilateralism, and democracy in the face of rising protectionism and geopolitical tensions, particularly between the US and China. The two leaders adopted a five-year action plan to enhance cooperation in areas such as security, economy, trade, and climate change.

The action plan includes collaborations on peace, multilateralism, security, defense, and economic projects. Both Brazil and Japan are facing challenges, such as trade tariffs imposed by the US, and are looking to strengthen their partnership to navigate global uncertainties. The plan also focuses on climate change initiatives, with Japan offering support for disaster resilience, decarbonization efforts, and combating illegal deforestation in the Amazon region.

A Brazilian business delegation accompanying Lula held an economic forum with Japanese counterparts, resulting in agreements on 80 public and commercial projects. The leaders also discussed elevating economic cooperation between Japan and the Mercosur trade bloc to a strategic partnership. Ishiba praised Brazil as a growing economic power that shares Japan’s principles and values.

Lula’s visit included meetings with Emperor Naruhito and a state banquet at the State Guest House. The collaboration between Brazil and Japan is seen as crucial for leading the international community towards harmony in the face of growing divisions and protectionist trends. The commitment to democracy, multilateralism, and free trade remains a core priority for both nations.
