Director of ’47 Ronin’ accused of defrauding Netflix of $11M – NBC New York

Hollywood Writer-Director Arrested for Alleged $11M Fraud Against Netflix

A Hollywood writer-director known for films like “47 Ronin” has been arrested on charges of swindling $11 million from Netflix for a sci-fi show that never aired. Carl Erik Rinsch allegedly diverted the funds to cryptocurrency investments and extravagant purchases, including luxury vehicles like Rolls-Royces and a Ferrari.

According to prosecutors, Rinsch convinced Netflix to pay an additional $11 million to complete the show, but instead transferred the money to personal accounts for failed investments and cryptocurrency trading. The profits were used for personal expenses and lavish spending, totaling about $10 million.

Rinsch was arrested in West Hollywood and appeared in court in Los Angeles, where he was released on a $100,000 bond. His attorney stated that the allegations against him are purely financial, and Rinsch did not enter a plea.

Netflix has not commented on the situation, and Rinsch’s court date in New York has not been scheduled. The case brings attention to the potential risks of financial misuse in the entertainment industry and raises questions about the security of investments and payments in Hollywood.
