Following the tragic deaths of two elementary school children in Prince George’s County due to the flu, schools in the area are taking precautions to limit the spread of the virus. The county has organized free flu shot clinics for parents and students in partnership with the school system and the Health Department. The clinics aim to provide an opportunity for families to get vaccinated and prevent further tragedies.
The first clinic was held at James Madison Middle School, with about 50 people attending in the first hour, including children as young as three years old. The county plans to hold more events based on the success of these initial efforts. Additionally, a clinic is scheduled at Fairmount High School on March 28.
In addition to the flu shot clinics, the school system is implementing measures to limit the spread of the flu, such as increased disinfection in schools and buses, providing hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies, limiting high-contact activities and large gatherings, and requiring masks at some schools in critical cases. The superintendent is urging families not to send students to school if they are feeling unwell.
Parents and students are being encouraged to get vaccinated to protect themselves and others from the flu. The goal is to ensure the safety and well-being of all students in the county. Vaccinations are available at the clinics, as well as through doctors and pharmacies in the area. The community is coming together to take proactive steps to prevent further tragedies caused by the flu.
