Russian troops used a gas pipeline to launch a surprise attack on Ukrainian forces in Kursk, approaching from behind

Russian special forces used a gas pipeline to strike Ukrainian units from the rear in the Kursk region, as reported by Ukraine’s military and Russian war bloggers. This comes as Russia attempts to recapture parts of its border province seized by Ukraine in a surprise offensive. The daring cross-border incursion into Kursk by Ukrainian forces in August led to the capture of territory and hundreds of Russian prisoners, with the aim of gaining leverage in future peace talks. However, Ukrainian soldiers in Kursk are now facing relentless assaults by over 50,000 troops, risking being encircled.

According to reports from Ukrainian-born pro-Kremlin bloggers, Russian operatives walked several kilometers inside the gas pipeline to launch an attack near the town of Sudzha. The town, which housed major gas transfer stations, was a crucial outlet for Russian gas exports through Ukrainian territory. Fierce fighting is ongoing in Sudzha, with Russian forces entering the town through the pipeline.

Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed the use of the pipeline by Russian “sabotage and assault groups” to gain a foothold outside Sudzha. The Russian troops were detected and responded to with rockets and artillery. The General Staff reported that Russian special forces are being detected, blocked, and destroyed, with high enemy losses in Sudzha. The situation in Kursk remains tense as the conflict continues.
