Local emergency declared in Long Island, NY as wildfires ignite

On Saturday afternoon, wildfires broke out in a wooded area of Long Island, New York, near Westhampton, fueled by strong winds, low humidity, and a Southern Pine Beetle infestation. The fires led to a closure of a portion of the Sunrise Highway and a service road. The size and cause of the fires are still unclear at this time. Town Supervisor Maria Moore declared a state of emergency due to the dangerous conditions and threat to public safety.

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine stated that Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services were coordinating the response to three major brush fires. Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the state National Guard is providing air support by helicopter and working with local law enforcement.

The National Weather Service had warned of an elevated fire risk earlier in the day due to low humidity and high wind gusts. They cautioned against any potential ignition sources, as fires could spread quickly in these conditions.

The situation is currently developing, and updates are expected. Stay tuned for more information on the wildfires in Long Island.
