Transportation Secretary writes to DC Mayor, WMATA, and Amtrak requesting safety enhancements

The Trump Administration is urging D.C. leaders to prioritize safety and security in the city’s transportation systems in order to “restore greatness to our nation’s capital.” U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy sent letters to D.C. officials, including Mayor Muriel Bowser, Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner, and WMATA CEO Randy Clarke, emphasizing the need to focus on reducing crime, improving passenger security, and making roads safer.

Duffy specifically called on WMATA to address fare evasion and lower crime on metro buses and trains to ensure the safety of commuters. Violent incidents, such as the recent robbery of a man’s coat on a Metro train by teens, have raised concerns among passengers. Additionally, Duffy urged Mayor Bowser to prioritize road safety and ensure that traffic signs and markings are used for their intended purpose, not as a form of expression.

Amid discussions about changing the “Black Lives Matter Plaza” mural near the White House and a bill seeking to remove the phrase, the Trump Administration is pushing for improvements in transportation safety. Duffy also called on Amtrak to prevent crime and better manage Union Station, following a recent fatal shooting in the station’s parking garage.

D.C. officials have responded, with WMATA thanking Duffy for his letter and expressing a commitment to working together to enhance safety. Bowser’s office did not provide a comment at this time, and Amtrak’s response is still pending. The administration’s push for safety improvements in D.C.’s transportation systems comes as the city aims to address concerns and make necessary changes to ensure safe and secure commutes for all.
