U.S. Immigration Agents Planning Nationwide Operation to Arrest Migrant Families
U.S. immigration agents are preparing for a new operation to arrest migrant families with children as part of a nationwide crackdown, according to sources familiar with the planning. The operation will target adults and minor children who entered the country together and have deportation orders. They will be placed into detention before being removed from the country.
Additionally, a separate operation is underway to find children who entered the United States unaccompanied and were released without court dates. Lawyers at Immigration and Customs Enforcement are now working to secure warrants to enter homes and conduct the arrests.
These plans come as the Trump administration is also working to bring back family detention centers that were closed under the Biden administration. One private prison group, Core Civic, has announced the reopening of its family detention center in Dilley, Texas, which can hold up to 2,400 people at a time.
Past administrations, including Obama, Trump, and Biden, have all attempted to deter families and unaccompanied minors from crossing the border by various means. The second Trump administration’s new plan for large-scale family detentions could be complicated by federal court rules that limit the time minors can be held in ICE custody with their parents.
