DC police shoot and kill man following alleged knife attack and carjacking attempt

In a tragic incident on Tuesday evening in Washington D.C., a man was shot and killed by police after a series of threatening actions, including crashing into a police cruiser, brandishing a knife, and attempting to carjack a woman. The incident, which occurred in the 3500 block of Georgia Avenue NW, was the second police shooting of the day, happening hours after the first and less than half a mile away.

According to D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith, the suspect veered into oncoming traffic and struck a police cruiser before exiting his vehicle with a knife. The suspect then demanded the officer’s service weapon while swinging the knife, leading the officer to fire his weapon in response. Despite attempts to de-escalate the situation, the suspect continued to pose a threat and was ultimately shot by a second officer.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, and the incident is under investigation by the department’s Internal Affairs Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Body-worn camera footage is being reviewed to piece together the timeline of events.

Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect or his possible motive, and the investigation is ongoing. Police emphasized that the shooting was unrelated to another officer-involved shooting earlier in the day. Thankfully, no officers or bystanders were injured in the incident.
