Resumption of Recovery Efforts at Site of Fatal Plane and Helicopter Collision near Washington

Crews in Arlington, Virginia are working to recover the remains of the 67 people who died in a midair collision between a passenger jet and Army helicopter near the nation’s capital. The crash occurred last Wednesday night in the Potomac River. So far, authorities have recovered and identified 55 of the victims and are confident they will find all of them. The National Transportation Safety Board is not providing further updates from the scene.

Salvage crews have successfully recovered pieces of the crashed aircraft, including a jet engine and large pieces of the plane’s exterior. They are now focusing on recovering the cockpit and other remains. The American Airlines flight had 60 passengers and four crew members on board, many of whom were figure skaters returning from a competition in Wichita, Kansas. The Black Hawk helicopter was on a training mission with three personnel onboard from various parts of the U.S.

Federal investigators are working to determine the events leading up to the collision, but a detailed investigation could take over a year. However, they hope to provide a preliminary report within the next 30 days. This crash is the deadliest in the U.S. since 2001 when a jet struck a New York City neighborhood, killing all passengers and crew on board.
